Awesome Carvings

At first glance, this looks like an ordinary log. But there’s something hiding inside of it. When it’s given a firm shake, a series of castles rise from its surface, much like the opening credits of Game of Thrones. These ones were posted by Ctoom, but you can find similar pop-up sculptures over on Etsy.

Artist Zheng Chunhui has spent four years carving away at a single tree trunk to create this intricate 40-foot-long sculpture, with 500 hand-carved figurines. The scene replicates a famous Chinese painting created 1,000+ years ago.

Villafane Studios claims that it’s “home of the most gorgeous pumpkins on the planet” and from what we’ve seen we believe it. Funny, grotesque and scary, these carvings are a real treat to look at.

Food artisan Shawn Feeney used a caseload of watermelons and a couple of pineapples to create this amazing, intricate carved dragon which looks good enough to eat (or will it eat you?)

Belgian artist Wim Delvoye took thick rubber car and truck tires, and carved intricate patterns into their sides and treads, creating stunning works of art from otherwise discarded junk.

Artist Kylie Stillman breathes new life into dead books by skillfully carving out silhouette-like tree designs. It’s all the more interesting when you remember where paper comes from.
