In the early ’80s, spurred by the success of Dragon Quest, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Koichi Ishii and Akitoshi Kawazu came up with a roleplaying video game inspired by Western tabletop RPGs. The result is a series that, while not always brilliant, is never afraid to reinvent itself.
